A Halloween Idea

The Samhain Pie started as a tongue-in-cheek joke while reading about the history of the pentagram. An apple is said to have a pentagram inside referenced by the 5 seeds that use appear at the core. Essential it would be a Protection pie meant to ward off bad spirits. I mean it is Halloween. ghosts and ghoulies and the witching hour. I spoke to a friend of mind who suggested that I bless the water I was going to use for the crust. I explain the process on my YouTube Channel. The Apples are cut thin showing their cross section and the top is done in a pentagram. 

1. Make the Crust

Ingredients
  • 3 Cups AP flour
  • 2 Ts White Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Ts Kosher Salt
  • 1 Ts Ginger
  • 1 Ts Cinnamon
  • 1 Ts Nutmeg
  • 1 C Shorting
  • 1/2 C or more Blessed Moon Water 


















Place all the Dry ingredients into a medium bowl.


Add the cup of Shortening and cut in until the fat is the size of peas.



















Form into a Disk and wrap allowing to rest for at least 30 minutes if not longer.


2. Create Filling

Ingrediants
2 Pounds Apples (about 4)
1/2 C Sugar
1/2 C B. Sugar
1 Ts Kosher Salt
1 Ts Cinnamon
1 Ts Nutmeg
1 Ts Ginger

Mix the Dry Ingredients together to make a Cinnamon-Sugar mixture, put aside.


Using a slicer or mandolin slice the apple cross ways as thinly as possible. layer the apple slices in a pan or bowl and spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture. continue to layer until you have sliced all the apples. wrap and refrigerate.

3. Assembly

Roll out the dough to about a 13'' diameter. place into a pie pan.


Take a 1/4 of the dough and role into a long rectangle  and use a knife to create 5 long strips.


 Take the Apple filling and place into the shell.


Take the strips and place them in a star pattern forming. Fold over the excess lip of the pie shell cementing the ends of the lattice in between the crust. Use a fork to do a Fork Crimp on the outside crust.


Brush with an Egg wash and sprinkle with sugar preferable Caster or Rock Sugar.


4. Baking

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 40 minutes, take out and let cool. 

Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream.
